§1.4 Autonomy: from manual to fully autonomous

The semi- versus fully-autonomous distinction is not about the technology, but about who makes the decision.

Open §1.4 in the academy

Autonomy is a spectrum, usually described by the position of the human in the decision loop. The further the human is out of the loop, the less a live datalink is needed — and the less grip EW has.

LevelHuman's roleExample
ManualPilot flies continuously, every inputClassic FPV drone
Semi-autonomous — human in the loopSystem flies/navigates itself (waypoints, height/position hold, return-to-home), but the human approves every engagementWaypoint ISR; interceptor with fire authorisation
Semi-autonomous — human on the loopSystem acts on its own; the human supervises and can intervene/abortLoitering munition with operator override
Fully autonomous — human out of the loopSelf-launch, seek, select and engage without interventionATR-guided munition; future autonomous counter-air (see Chapter 9.2)
Key point

Two systems can be technically identical; the difference is who makes the engagement decision. Automated Target Recognition (ATR) is the key technology that takes the human out of the loop — and simultaneously makes the drone immune to datalink jamming (see 4.2 and 9.1).
