§3.2 Critical flight phases

Take-off, climb, approach, landing and low-level flight share the same vulnerability as drone envelopes.

Open §3.2 in the academy

An aircraft is not equally vulnerable at all times. The phases in which it flies low and slow — take-off, climb, approach and landing — coincide exactly with the altitude band where most drone types operate. The same applies to tactical low-level flight during the cruise phase.

Key point

An aircraft parked on the ground shares the same vulnerability: loitering munitions and FPVs are proven effective against static targets — see the precedents in Chapter 5.1.

This also underpins the "Survive" layer of the self-protection framework: see Chapter 7.4 for how procedures can address this vulnerability.
